Sample Track 7: Eva Arriving
Unseen Rain
Dean Magraw, Jim Anton, and JT Bates
2007 - Candyrat Records
The music collected here was woven into existence in a three-day period of live in the studio recording with my colleagues jim anton and jt bates. The sounds captured reveal the fruits of uncounted hours of ensemble building; stretching and merging the possibilities of strict part-playing with wide open explorations of each melodic moment.
Dissolving the individual "I" in the dynamic liquid of the collective "us", a new entity is unleashed, capable of seeking ever-higher levels of expressions unavailable to the isolated player. You know...... a band.
In other words, thank you from the bottom of my heart to the true heroic warriors of this enterprise, jim anton and jt bates. Thanks for: breathing life into these melodies, searching the honest depths of your emotions, listening, listening, listening soaring through the process, with humor and grace, and on and on. And for those who want to join this band, the simple membership requirements are as follows. . .
Open up. Listen. Be healed.
Raven
Sample Track 8: Lianna
Dean Magraw and John Williams
2006 - Compass Records
"This loose-limbed Raven soars effortlessly. Chicagoan John Williams, founder member of Solas and a man who's on fluent speaking terms with concertina, accordion, flute, low whistle and piano, brings a zest to both traditional and original tunes, and he's found his spiritual equal in guitarist Dean Magraw, who's a mean draw when it comes to tune writing, too.
There's enough space in between this pair's playing to let the oxygen molecules truly ignite, whether in the company of a Kerry barndance (The Gypsy Princess) or a madcap foray into the unknown (Trippin' Into Eden)."
" What matters most of all, though, is the duo's utter confidence in the music's ability to carve its own identity without a hint of posturing. An inspired pairing." - Siobhán Long, Irish Times
Claudia
Schmidt Live at the Dakota
with the Dean Magraw Quintet
2006
" Live at the Dakota is billed as 'Claudia Schmidt With the Dean Magraw Quintet' but it might more aptly be described as the 'Claudia Schmidt/Dean Magraw Sextet.' This is a collaborative ensemble effort where the vocalist is truly an instrument and, as often as not, the focus is on one or more of the other 'voices'." - Andrea Canter, Jazz Police
Recorded live at the Dakota
Jazz Club in Minneapolis in May 2006.

Seventh One
1998 - Red House Records
Available as Kitchen Man
on Acoustic
Music
"...a mature artist creating breathtakingly beautiful music...
At times there is an almost telepathic interplay between the musicians
as they turn the compositions inside out in their attempts to twist every
melodic nuance from them. In the process they create one of the best
instrumental albums of 1998."
-Folk & Acoustic Music Exchange
